For nearly four decades Australian Academic Press (AAP) has published respected titles in the behavioural sciences, helping professionals share ideas that strengthen practice and improve lives. Most AAP titles are published under the traditional royalty model used across the publishing industry. However, many valuable professional and scholarly books do not easily fit that model. Practitioner guides, workbooks, program manuals, specialist professional texts, institutional publications, and Open Access monographs may have highly focused audiences, making them difficult for traditional publishers to justify commercially under a royalty-based model, even when the content is strong.
For this reason AAP also offers professional publishing partnerships. In this model the author contributes to the upfront production costs of the book. In return the project is developed and published as an AAP title — professionally edited and designed, released under the AAP imprint, and distributed internationally through established publishing networks.
This approach is particularly suited to experienced professionals who want to turn their knowledge, frameworks and practical insights into a credible book while working with an established specialist publisher rather than navigating self-publishing alone.
Each publishing partnership includes:
A publishing partnership works particularly well for specialised books where the value lies not only in retail sales but in the professional role the book plays.
For many authors the book becomes a professional resource — something that supports consulting, teaching, training, research dissemination, or the documentation of specialist knowledge.
Projects commonly include:
Practitioner guides
Professional workbooks and intervention manuals
Training and workshop resources
Specialised professional texts
Open Access monographs
Institutional or commemorative publications
Course or placement support resources
Specialist knowledge drawn from long professional experience
Publishing agreements are tailored to each project following review of the manuscript and proposal. As a general guide, investment typically ranges between $5,000 and $15,000 (AUD), depending on scope and service requirements. In addition to the publishing services provided, authors receive copies of their book and retain the ability to use those copies in their own professional work.
All projects are assessed for quality, relevance, and alignment with AAP’s standards.
